The aim of research at SYNMIKRO is understanding molecular, biochemical, cellular, genetical, and ecological functions in microorganisms followed by construction of synthetic microbial units.
Analyses of components and functions of microbial cells are still statically determined rather than trying to study the broad molecular networking inside of living entities. Using both synthetic, analytical, and modeling approaches, SYNMIKRO aims to understand the very basics of molecular interactions leading to the sophisticated and intriguing principles of inheritance, cell division, metabolism, adaptation, and finally: evolution. The collaboration of biologists, biochemists and chemists, physicists and mathematicians, computational biologists and ethicists of SYNMIKRO offers many opportunities to tailor the capacity of microorganisms improving, or finding new playgounds, of potential application.
SYNMIKRO is divided into six research areas: Cellular Signal Processing and Regulation, Metabolism, Cellular Organisation, Chassis and Genomes, Microbial Communities, and Modeling & Bioethics. Within these six areas, a growing number of individual research projects will facilitate arriving the terra incognita of microbial life and its ever lasting capacity to colonize even the adversest locations on earth.
Exploring and applying signaling compounds: the oldest colloquies of the world executed in new synthetic systems.
Studying temporally and spatially controlled molecular interactions to understand and optimize cell cycle, cellular differentiation, and multicellular aggregates.
Scrutinizing microbial adaptations to eukaryotic hosts and determining substantial criteria for the design of minimal genomes to understand the minimum criteria of life.
Observing a nearly unlimited biosynthetic diversity and capacity to be exploited through combination and new design of individual enzymes.
Producing and studying synthetic microbial communities to be compared to natural communities.
Applying bioinformatic tools and algorithms. Evaluation of the momentum of synthetic biology to the society.
SYNMIKRO promotes potential Young Research Group Leaders by constantly keeping its doors open to welcome and support Young Researchers planning to set up an Independent Research Group.
The list is bearing both, retired as well as researchers who left SYNMIKRO to work elsewhere. We would like to express our many thanks to all of them and respectfully appreciate their commitment and efforts materializing SYNMIKRO Research Center.
